“Where there is poverty, there can be no freedom.” - Nelson Mandela
::: ECONOMY
::: MISSION STATEMENT

The goal of PPEOJ is to improve the standard of living for Jamaicans through economic education.

This can be accomplished through the engagement of stakeholders of the Jamaican Diaspora, in a discourse that influences policy makers on issues of importance. It is imperative that Jamaicans play an active role in how public policies are legislated and implemented. This is important as public policies directly impact the economic growth of the country and the standard of living of each resident.

Economic growth is best achieved when there is an environment where businesses can flourish, property rights are respected and the rule of law is enforced. This will usually result in an increased in the demand for labor and therefore alleviate more people out of poverty. When businesses are unable to profit due to labor disputes and crime - this affects each household as it causes an increase in the cost of consumer products. An increase in production cost could lead to increases in unemployment and inflation.
PERSPECTIVE

For 150 years, Jamaica was the world's number one producer of sugar exporting 22% of the world's sugar supply. This was during the 18th Century under the slave economy.

In 1655 the country was seized by the British establishing what is referred to as the plantation economy. The first Maroon war took place 200 years after the first slaves arrived. It would be another 117 years before Britain would grant emancipation in 1834, which was freedom with conditions. Complete freedom was not granted until 1838.

Public Service is defined as services provided by a government to its citizens. These services should in general be available to all, and are used by most citizens’ n a regular basis through government offices and branches. Normally these are healthcare, fire, water, security, transportation and others depending on the economic system. These agencies and branches of government are normally established and enforceable by law. Many people are completely convinced that without an overarching organization that looks out for the interest of the individual the world would be chaotic and so we have become dependent on government to provide services we regard as inherently government. For thousands of years beginning in Africa, Egypt, China and later Europe there have been different forms of governments allowing for varying degrees of public interaction and representation. Some were monarchs and others were communal while later western civilization introduced the democracy in Greece and Rome – the form we practice today in most parts of the world. In common they all claim to represent the interest of the electorate and collect taxes.
